I opened a checking account with Wells Fargo ( ” WF ” ) XX/XX/XXXX at a branch in XXXX, XXXX. It was a no fee college student checking account. I actively used that account until XX/XX/XXXX at which point I moved to XXXX, XXXX. XX/XX/XXXX, WF had not yet opened branches in XXXX, so I moved the majority of my cash assets to another bank, but kept the WF account open with some cash remaining. When I checked the status of my account a few years later ( approx. XX/XX/XXXX/XXXX ), I was surprised to find out that WF had closed my checking account. Worse, I never received a check from WF with my remaining cash balance in the WF checking account. I never authorized any change to my free checking account, let alone its closing.
In the wake of the recent developments about WF ‘s fraudulent practices, I began to wonder what happened to my cash in my checking account. I saw that WF took out full page ads in the XXXX XXXX XXXX to call about complaints to restore customer confidence, so I called that number to see if WF would pay back the money they took from me. I provided my WF checking account information as well as relevant dates to the WF customer representatives but none were willing or able to help me. In fact, they had no record of my checking account despite the fact that it was still apparently open as recent as a few years ago. I obviously knew my account had existed and still had checks, etc. listing the account number. In the end, WF representatives refused to help me. I even think that they thought I was lying about my account ( ironic given their track record on honesty ).
I suspect a couple things may have happened : 1 ) They changed the nature of my account, without my consent, and ate away at the balance through ” fees ”, or 2 ) they simply stole the money and closed my account as inactive. I also suspect that the reason WF could n’t locate my account is because they had ( or still have ) record retention policies which favor their fraudulent dealings with customer accounts.
