Top 6 Best Pop Up Camper Bike Racks On The Market Reviews
1 Swagman XC2 Hitch Mount Bike Rack – Most Convenient Pop Up Camper Bike Rack
Swagman is an American company with a long history of manufacturing good quality bicycle racks.
The Swagman XC2 Hitch Mount Bike Rack is strong and lightweight. The frame is constructed from steel with an anti-corrosive black powder coat finish. All the pads, hooks, and accessories are made from high-quality materials and built to last.
Works on a hitch mount or camper…
It can be attached to any Class 3 2” hitch mount. Alternatively, if your camper has a 4.5” steel welded bumper, it can be mounted there.
The fact is that the Swagman XC2 Hitch Mount Bike Rack gives you plenty of mounting options, plus the capability of switching the rack between your camper and other vehicles.
Works for most bike sizes…
The rack can hold two bikes up to a maximum wheelbase of 52”. The cradles can be slid up and down the frame to ensure you get a good fit regardless of your bike’s size. Additionally, the rack can hold bikes with wheels between 20” to 29”. This means that you can take almost any bikes you like.
Putting your bikes into the bike trays is easy and requires a minimum of lifting. You simply place the wheels into each of the separate trays. Then you pull down the padded ratcheted arms onto the top tube of your frame.
Quick and easy…
It’s a fast and easy loading process. But even better than this is that once in position, they stay put. The padded arms do a great job of holding your frames tight.
Furthermore, the wheels trays do a great job of minimizing wheel movement. Plus, the hitch receiver does a great job of preventing frame wobble.
Is it all good then?
Well, not quite. The only negative is that the 35lbs weight limit for each bike is a little low. This limit is not unusual for a bike rack, but it can be a little restrictive. If you have a heavy cruiser, fat bike, or heavy full suspension mountain bike, they may be too heavy for the Swagman XC2.
Get your scales out and check before you buy. Even if you don’t have one of the bikes, we’ve highlighted it’s still worth making sure they’re under 35lbs. It’s surprising how many bikes fall foul of this limit.
- Easy and quick to load.
- Two mounting options.
- No frame-wobble.
- High build quality.
- Lifetime warranty.
- 35lbs single bike limit.
2 Allen Sports 3-Bike Hitch Racks for 1 1/4 in. and 2 in. Hitch – Easiest to Use Best Pop Up Camper Bike Racks
The Allen Sports rack is compatible with all 1 ¼” and 2’ hitch receivers. It comes mostly pre-assembled and can be fixed to your car in seconds. This is mainly down to its rapid install locking system.
Durable and secure…
The frame is constructed from steel and features an anti-corrosive black powder coat. The cradles are plastic, lined with thick padding to protect your frame. The straps use a belt and buckle system that is simple but effective and hard-wearing.
When loading the bikes, it’s best to load the heaviest first and load each one opposite to the other. Once in the cradle, it takes just seconds to strap them down.
One thing we would like to see included is a strap to tie the front wheels to its frame. This would prevent the front wheels from moving during transit and would thus minimize the possibility of any bike to bike contact.
Size isn’t a problem, but weight could be…
The Allen Sports 3-Bike Rack can carry all types of bikes and regardless of frame length, wheel diameter, or wheel size. However, you are restricted to an all too familiar 35lbs weight limit. Although it’s more than sufficient for most bikes, we still believe that it’s too low.
More positively, the rack has a one-touch button that folds it down to fit flush with your vehicle when not in use. Another cool feature is the tilt mechanism that can fold the rack down with the bikes still attached. This allows you to get access to the rear of your vehicle. It’s a two-handed operation, but once you have the locking pin out of place, it works well.
- Well-padded cradles.
- Instant hitch attachment.
- Easy to load.
- One-touch fold away system.
- Tilt mechanism.
- No front wheel ties.
3 Thule Insta-Gater Pro Truck Bed Bike Rack – Best Pop Up Camper Fat Bike Rack
Thule Insta-Gater Pro Truck Bed Bike Rack is an upright rack that is designed to hold a single bike. It requires no special fixing and can be used on the bed of any truck or camper.
Great for fat tire bikes…
The Thule bike rack has adjustable front legs that can be positioned depending on the geometry of your vehicle. Once in place, it can hold any bike with wheel diameters between 20” to 29” and with a wheel width up to 5”.
We’re sure you’ll all agree it’s great to have a bike rack that can cater for bikes with fatter tires.
Higher weight limit that others…
Another plus is that the weight limit is a healthy 50lbs. It’s one of our frequent moans that far too many racks have a weight limit of just 35lbs.
Although that weight is usually fine, it’s not always the case. And it can be insufficient for a significant number of bikes. It’s one reason this is listed as one of the Best Pop Up Camper Bike Racks for Fat Bikes.
Easy to operate…
To load the rack, you place the front wheel in its tray. Then you pull down the padded ratchet arm on to the top of the frame. It takes a second to secure, and it won’t move or wobble around once it’s properly in place.
Added security feature…
One final plus is that the Thule rack has an integrated one lock system that secures your bike to the rack. Plus, if you have a bike on the inside of your camper, or the bed of your truck, your much less likely to suffer for theft in the first place.
One of the downsides of the Thule rack is that you can only carry one bike. If you need to carry two bikes, you could use two racks sided by side if you have space.
However, this is already a relatively expensive rack. Therefore, to buy two racks would probably be too expensive of an option.
- It can carry fat bikes.
- 50lbs weight limit.
- Integrated security lock.
- No special fixing is required.
- It can only hold a single bike.
4 Saris Bones EX Trunk Bike Rack Carrier, Mount 3 Bikes, Black – Most Versatile Pop Up Camper Bike Rack
The Sair Bones bike rack is a high-quality US designed product.
The rack is made from 100% recyclable materials. This is always a good starting point. But even better, the frame and the arms are made from a strong, injection-molded material, guaranteed rust-free.
Fits on most types of vehicles…
The arms and legs form a curved shape that makes it suitable for more campers, SUVs, and sedans than any other rack. It will even fit over vehicles with a fitted spoiler. This makes it highly versatile and easy to switch between vehicles.
Won’t scratch your bike or your car…
The company places a high degree of focus on ensuring neither your vehicle nor bikes get damaged. To this end, the hooks on the end of the six straps all have a special coating to prevent scratching.
Plus, there are rubber feet that help to hold the frame in place, won’t harm your vehicle’s paintwork.
Installs in under a minute…
Fitting the rack on the back of your camper takes less than a minute. There are instructions, but it’s an intuitive job. Once the rack is secured and loaded, you can also be sure that there will be no lateral movement, swaying, or wobbling.
The cradles and locking system are well padded and some of the best we’ve seen. They’re strong, easy to operate, and durable. Loading three bikes onto the rack takes very little time.
Why not make it 50?
The weight limit is 35lbs per bike. We don’t want to sound like a broken record…but! OK, we get it, this will be fine in 80 to 90 percent of cases. It’s just that a rack with a 50lbs weight capacity would be suitable for 99% of bikes.
Would that be so hard to do?
Finishing on a positive, we love the clever integrated strap system. This neatly keeps the straps wrapped together to prevent them from flapping about when you’re on the move. We wish more bike racks were built like this.
- Suitable for most vehicles.
- 100% recyclable materials.
- Rust-free guarantee.
- Integrated strap mechanism.
- Anti-scratch coatings on all contact points.
- No security locks.
5 Saris Freedom Bike Hitch and Spare Tire Car Rack Mount, 2 or 4 Bicycle Carrier Options – Best Heavy Duty Pop Up Camper Bike Rack
This is a hitch-mounted bike rack that can be used with any standard 1 ¼” or 2” hitch mount receiver. If you have a camper that carries a spare tire on the rear, Saris has an option available. Additionally, there are two and four bike rack versions.
Capable of holding a variety of sizes…
The Saris bike rack can hold any type of bike with a wheelbase of up to 48”. The wheel holders can be moved up and down the frame to accommodate bikes with all different wheelbases.
What’s more, if you’re bike has an extra-long wheelbase, you can order a rack with an extra long frame.
This already looks good, but it gets better. For those of you with fat bikes, you can order wheel holders specifically to accommodate fat bike tires. This is a great feature that so very few other bike rack manufactures can provide.
Amazing 60lbs weight limit…
So far, we’re impressed, but what could seal the deal for a lot of you is that the weight limit is 60lbs. Yes, that’s for a single bike. Maybe someone is listening to us after all!
Lifting your bikes into the wheel holders takes a couple of seconds for each bike. Securing them by the wheels and the frames in the cradles take less than a minute, tops.
Bikes stay safely in place…
The ratcheted straps are strong, durable, and quick to pull tight and loosen. Just as importantly, they’re well-padded on the inside so you won’t scratch your wheels or the paintwork of your frame.
On the move, the rack doesn’t swing, and there are zero movements from the bikes. The chance of bike to bike contact is non-existent. This is exactly how we like it.
With Saris also providing a lifetime warranty, this is undoubtedly a very strong package.
- Suitable for all sizes of bikes.
- It can carry fat bikes.
- 60lbs weight limit.
- Easy to load.
- Spare tire option available.
- Lifetime warranty.
- Instructions are poor.
6 YAKIMA, HoldUp Hitch Mount Tray Bike Rack – Best Premium Pop Up Camper Bike Rack
We think that all pop-up camper bike racks should be built this way. The quality of the Yakima HoldUp Hitch Mount Tray Bike Rack is outstanding. As far as quality goes, it’s the best on our list. Not surprisingly, it also happens to be the most expensive.
So, what exactly do you get for your money?
You get a well-built and durable frame that can be attached to your vehicle in seconds with either a 1-1/4” or a 2” hitch receiver. The bike rack can hold two bikes though you can opt for the HoldUp +2 version if you need to carry four.
You also get a rack that can carry many sizes of bikes with a wheel diameters between 20” to 29”. You can also carry fat bikes with no problem. However, best of all is that you get a 60lbs weight limit for each bike. This will enable you to carry just about any fat bike or e-bike.
Two additional features we especially like…
Firstly, the Yakima rack has an integrated strong arm hook for each bike. Once the bike is lifted and strapped into the wheel trays, the strong arm hook pulls down over the top tube to hold your bike in place. It’s a rock-solid, quick, and easy system.
The second thing is the inclusion of an SKS integrated lock. The lock not only secures the bikes to the rack but also secures the rack to your vehicle. This makes it one of the very few camper bike racks to offer dual locking and security.
If all of this wasn’t enough, you can also tilt the rack away from the rear of your camper with the bikes in situ. This translates into easy access to the rear of your vehicle whenever you need it.
- High build quality.
- Fat bikes will fit.
- 60lbs individual bike weight limit.
- Strong arm mechanism.
- SKS dual lock.
- Easy tilt access.
- Heavy and difficult to install into the hitch receiver.
Best Pop Up Camper Bike Racks Buying Guide
Trunk Mounted Bike Racks…
These are the least expensive of the three options. As well as being affordable, they also have the advantages of being easy to store and relatively lightweight. Another big benefit is that they can fit most vehicles without the need for any modifications.
Unfortunately, the hooks on the end of the straps can potentially scratch your paintwork if you’re not careful. Additionally, once attached to your camper, you can’t access the rear of your vehicle without taking off all the bikes and the rack. However, the biggest negative is that they provide no real security.
Despite these shortcomings, they’re still a good choice. If you do choose a trunk-mounted bike rack, we recommend the…
Saris Bones EX Trunk Bike Rack
It’s compatible with more vehicles than any other rack and offers high-quality anti-scratch coating on all the metal hooks.
Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks…
Hitch-mounted bike racks fit straight into your hitch receiver. They’re easy to install, stable, can take a heavier load than a trunk-mounted bike rack, and frequently offer some kind of security measure.
They undoubtedly have some heavy-hitting advantages. However, you will need a hitch mount to use one. And when not in use, they’re difficult to store. Not to mention they’re heavy and more expensive than the majority of trunk-mounted receivers. The…
…are great hitch mount bike rack options.
Truck Bed Mounted Bike Racks…
Trunk bed-mounted bike racks are a bit of an outlier for camper users, but they still have a few advantages. The big advantage is that you can get the bike into the camper where it will be more secure. Likewise, they’re quick to set up and load. Plus, they are highly stable and can be switched for use on your truck.
The main disadvantage is that they need a lot of space.
If you prefer a truck-mounted bike rack, then take another look at the…
Maximum Weight Capacity…
One of our biggest complaints is that bike racks have a low maximum weight capacity. If you only carry road bikes, cyclo-cross bike, gravel bikes, and city bikes, you’ll be OK. However, there are plenty of bikes that weigh more.
For this reason, we believe that 50lbs is a good minimum weight limit. It doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t recommend a bike rack with a 35lbs limit. It just means that a 50lbs weight limit will give you a lot more options down the line.
If you’re hauling heavier bikes, then you need to check out the…
Saris Freedom or the Yakima rack
We’d never advise you to leave your bikes unattended at any point. We’re sure it’s something most people rarely do. However, if for whatever reason, this is unavoidable, you need to consider some kind of security.
In these circumstances, you should look more closely at a hitch-mounted bike rack. These tend to have better-integrated solutions for keeping your bike safe from theft.
The very best of these is the…
